Skateboard bearings
Skateboard wheels are mounted to a truck’s axle
by two skateboard bearings. These ball bearings are made of either steel,
silicon nitride, or high-tech ceramic. The durability of a bearing is
key, since it takes a good deal of wear and tear during the activity
of skating.
Skateboard bearings are graded according to a ABEC scale. This scale
starts at the lowest rating of 1 and occurs every odd number up until
9. The ABEC rating measures the given tolerance of a bearing, but has
little influence on the overall performance of bearings specially designed
for skateboards.
The rating of skateboard bearings only becomes influential to riders
who reach top speeds and race competitively. This means that bearings
are of greater importance to longboard riders and slalom racers. Online
retailers offer a wide variety of bearings to suit the many varied riding
styles.
