Longboards
Longboards are growing in popularity across the country
as a convenient way to commute short distances and ride with friends.
Longboards are similar in shape to more traditional skateboards, although
they are designed with a greater width and length, and are usually flat
instead of concave.
A longboards greater weight and length make them less ideal than skateboards
for performing street style skate tricks and are poorly designed for
vert skating or half pipes. They are best used in downhill racing (slalom)
and for transportation. Their greater bulk contributes to providing
more momentum for the rider so that it takes less energy to cover the
same amount of ground as a skateboard would.
Longboards have also been referred to as the surf board of concrete.
The unique design allows a rider to make big, exaggerated turns, or
short carves, much like in surfing. Longboarding became popular among
the surf crowd of California and Hawaii in the 1960s, although it has
spread throughout the world into both urban and rural areas alike.
